3051Zora - Manuel Zora (1895-1979)
  • Reference
  • People
Manuel Zora (1895-1979) was a colorful, cocky, dramatic man whose life story reflects his personality. Manuel Zora was born on October 4, 1895 in Olhao, Portugal. He left Portugal when very young, sailing on schooner, "Cabo Verde," as a cabin boy. The ship smuggled men out of Portugal to avoid army service. He settled in Providence, Rhode Island and married Judith "Judy" Greene Tobey (1907-1969), daughter of Laura Pyne Clark and Berkeley Greene Tobey. Judy seems to have come from a distinguished New England family. Her mother, Laura, graduated from Mount Holyoke College and become a teacher, her father, Berkeley, was the financial secretary of the Boy Scouts of America. His second wife was Esther McCoy, noted architectural historian and critic. Judy's stepfather, Effingham Cock "Top" Murray, also a descendant of the Pilgrims, graduated from Haverford College in 1905. Judy acted in a summer stock theater company in Providence in 1925 and she married fisherman Manuel Zora. Their daughter, Mary Ellen (1926-1991) was born on March 10, 1926 in Provincetown. Manny became Captain Manuel Zora and was a successful fisherman on his 38-foot fishing boat, "Mary Ellen." And, during Prohibition, 1919-1933, Manuel Zora became one of the most storied rum runners on the East Coast. Zora means "fox" in Portuguese. The Coast Guard nicknamed the elusive Manny, "The Sea Fox."

On April 19, 1893 the Cooper's son, Joseph Walter Cooper, married Nellie Sue Inman, daughter of Samuel Andrew Martin Inman and his first wife, Nancy Jane Dick. Nellie's father, Samuel Andrew Martin Inman was the owner of S.M. Inman & Co., one of the largest dealers in cotton in the world, with several branch offices in different parts of the South. He was one of the organizers and a director of the Southern Railway, the yards of which in Atlanta are named for him and was a major Georgian philanthropist. Nellie's brother, Henry Arthur Inman (1869-after 1920) and his wife, Roberta Sutherland Crew built their cottage, "Sutherland" now "Heeltap" at 16 Kinfolk Lane, Southwest Harbor, in 1901. Their son, Arthur Crew Inman (1895-1963) is notorious for having written the "Inman Diaries." On March 28, 1894 Samuel Andrew Martin Inman and his recently acquired second wife, Mildred (McPheeters) Inman (1867-1946), gave a lavish reception at their home in Atlanta, Georgia, for their daughter Nellie and her mother in law, Emma Jane Cooper. This fulsome description of the party, published in "The Atlanta Constitution" on March 29, 1894 illustrates the world inhabited by the Cooper and Inman families.

Ruth Moore was an important Maine author of the twentieth century. She is best known for her honest portrayals of Maine people and evocative descriptions of the state. Now primarily thought of as a regional writer, Moore was a significant literary figure on the national stage during her career. Her second novel Spoonhandle spent fourteen weeks on the New York Times bestseller list in the company of George Orwell, W. Somerset Maugham and Robert Penn Warren. In her time, Moore was hailed as "New England's only answer to Faulkner" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruth_Moore).

Eleanor Ruth Mayo died on January 30, 1981. Her executor, Ruth Moore, made a gift of Eleanor’s photographic collection in 1988. The Eleanor R. Mayo Collection of more than 772 images consists of negatives, contact sheets and prints, many of which are photographic copies Eleanor made from various family collections belonging to Mount Desert Island residents, now long dead. Eleanor spent years on historical research that she compiled in the extensive indexes (Mayo Volume I and II) also part of the collection. I was the library archivist when the gift was made and subsequently worked on cataloging the collection from 1988 until 2006. The lives of authors Ruth Moore and Eleanor Ruth Mayo were their own, but their private lives and the lives they led on Mount Desert Island, were so intertwined that archivists find it difficult to divide documents, stories and photographs between them. It is for this reason that this Item exists in the database. It ties together other Items that relate more to both women than to either as an individual. “Homesick For That Place: Ruth Moore Writes About Maine” by Jennifer Craig Pixley is so well conceived that it may be recommended to those who are interested in Ruth and Eleanor above many other works, but there is much to be learned from everything included here.
