| The statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni (1400–1475), an Italian condottiero, who became captain-general of the Republic of Venice was modeled by Andrea del Verrocchio (1435–1488) and cast in bronze after Colleoni’s death by Alessandro Leopardi (working by 1842 – died 1522/3). Bartolomeo Colleoni had left money for the statue and asked that it be placed in the Piazza San Marco. Monuments were not permitted there so it was erected nearby next to the Basilica di San Giovanni e Paolo (seen in the background of Henry Rand’s photograph.) | Description: The statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni (1400–1475), an Italian condottiero, who became captain-general of the Republic of Venice was modeled by Andrea del Verrocchio (1435–1488) and cast in bronze after Colleoni’s death by Alessandro Leopardi (working by 1842 – died 1522/3).
