In the War of 1812, during the British blockade of the east coast, two British frigates, HMS Junon and HMS Tenedos, chased the USS Constitution into Marblehead Harbor and the safety of Fort Sewall. "When the USS Constitution, 'Old Ironsides,' was preparing for its 200th anniversary in 1997, the crew from Ralph W. Stanley was called in to help determine if it was seaworthy. So Ralph, Richard and his brother-in-law, Tim Goodwin, went to Boston to conduct a survey of the old warship. 'I went all over that ship,' Richard Stanley said. 'She was really in good shape. She could have sailed.' They made some suggestions, although he said he didn't know what the Navy did with the ship. During the winter of 1956-7, Roger C. Rich and Francis “Mickey” Fahey went to Plymouth, Massachusetts to build a replica of the Pilgrim’s shallop, while at the same time a replica of the Mayflower was being built in Plymouth, England. The shallop, 33’ long and equipped with a mainsail, a jib and oars, was the vessel that had remained with the Pilgrims in 1621 when the Mayflower sailed back to England. My father’s brother, Robert Rich, was a friend of George Davis, owner of Plymouth Marine Railways, who had the contract. Mr. Davis, whose father and grandfather came from Washington County, claimed that Maine boat builders were the best. SS “Canopic” was built in 1900 by Harland & Wolff in Belfast, Ireland. She had one funnel, two masts, 12,268 GRT tonnage, and was 176.28 x 18.08 m / 578.4 x 59.4 ft. She had a triple expansion engine with twin screws and a steel hull containing three decks. She carried 250-1st Class, 250-2nd Class and 800-3rd Class passengers. “Canopic” was originally built as “Commonwealth” for the Dominion Line and launched on May 31, 1900, she was completed in September 1900. The “Commonwealth” made her maiden voyage on October 4, 1900 from Liverpool to Boston. In 1903 she was sold to the White Star Line and renamed “Canopic.” At this time her tonnage changed to 12,097 GRT. The Canopic made her first White Star Line voyage on January 14, 1903 on the Liverpool to Boston service. In 1904 she was transferred to the New York to Mediterranean service. From 1917 till 1919 she operated under the Liner Requisition Scheme. In February 1919 she reverted back to White Star Line, and in July went to the New York to Mediterranean berth. In 1922 the “Canopic” replaced the “Arabic” on the Mediterranean route. On April 13, 1922 she made her first voyage on the Liverpool to Halifax to Boston route, then to the Montreal run for the summer. On November 10, 1922 she started on the Bremen to New York service. In November 1923 she took over the Hamburg to New York route. In September 1924 she was put on the Liverpool - Philadelphia - Portland, Maine to end her career. In October the “Canopic” was sold for breaking up to T.W. Ward, and scrapped at Briton Ferry, South Wales.

Ralph Warren Stanley sailed her for both families. She was built with a shorter bowsprit and single jib, but she had such a weather helm that Mr. Dunn had the bowsprit lengthened and an extra jib added and original jib made smaller. “That helped her some.” She was sold away and featured in a TV mini-series. The Friendship sloop Endeavor sunk off Rockland Harbor on July 24, 2001 while racing in the three-day Friendship Sloop Days Annual Homecoming. Divers searched for the wreck for a month until she was found 70 feet down on the bottom of the harbor by using sidescan SONAR on August 18th a short distance from where she went down. Efforts to raise “Endeavor” were unsuccessful until Southwest Harbor captain Douglas E. Beal Jr. (1952-), aboard his “Salvage III” brought her up on Friday, August 24 and brought her back home. This sequential set of photos shows the process of Endeavor being lifted out of the water by Salvage III and brought back to Southwest Harbor for inspection and repair. The photos also show the damage to the boat after a month under water.
