The view is from the Pemetic Hotel (The Castle) and, on the Southwest Harbor side, shows the Clarence Clark (Ellsbert/Heilaka) house left foreground. The long roofed building in the center, next to the harbor, a bowling alley after World War II - currently the Hamilton Marine building. The building on the right with the striped roof is the firm of Clark & Parker/Manset Marine Supply Co./ and the Oceanarium since 1979. The Oceanarium is the oldest commercial building on Clark Point - the only one extant except the Clarence Clark House. The Manset shore is in the background with discernible landmarks, including the Manset Union Church, the Stanley wharf, the early Stanley House and numerous commercial buildings on the Shore Road. There are about 30 schooners visible in the harbor and tied up at the wharves. - Identifications by Meredith Hutchins - 2006

The boathouse just visible over "Lillian's" bowsprit belonged to William Doane Stanley (1855-1932), "Uncle Jimmy." His Chester Clement built passenger launch, "Leader" is on the shore to the right of the boathouse. Jimmy used her to carry summer people in the summer. In the winter he took off the wicker chairs etc. and used her to carry sardines to the factories.

Remains of schooner "Catherine" in Fernald Cove, Somesville, 1935. A few years later a storm shifted the hulk to the shore at right where surviving frames and timbers could be seen for some years at low tide. After the wreck and before this photograph was taken, salvagers cut a hole through the side of the vessel to allow the mast to fall into the water and be salvaged. The hole, near the bow. is visible in this photograph. SWHPL 9500 was a duplicate of this item and has been removed.

The land in this photograph started out as part of the Clark family’s land, hence “Clark Point.” The upright building on the left of the photograph is the old Clark and Parker Store, the J.N. Mills Cash Store at the time this photograph was taken. Later it was the Manset Marine Supply store and, in 2012 the Oceanarium. This building is: 172 Clark Point Road – Tax Map 4 – Lot 30 – MHPC #405-0787. The wharf occupied by the long dormered building was originally Simeon “Sim” Holden Mayo’s boat shop. It was sold to Andrew Edward Parker in 1912. He ran a boat shop there until 1925 when it was sold to Chester Eben Clement for his boat shop. Researchers date this photograph at circa 1925 so it was probably still the property of Andrew Edward Parker. This building is: 168 Clark Point Road – Tax Map 4 – Lot 29.

Contrast the postcard view, titled "Entrance Somes Sound, North East Harbor, Me." in SWHPL 7010 with that of SWHPL 12460, which bears the title, "View near Somes Sound, So. West Harbor, Me." Both cards show the Nathaniel Gott House on Greenings Island. The image in SWHPL 12460 would be to the left or south of that in SWHPL 7010 if viewed from the water near Sutton Island. The title is misprinted on this card. It reads, "View near Somers Sound, So. West Harbor, Me." "Gladys" mailed the card to Miss Nena Reed in Seal Harbor from Center, Tremont, Maine on July 2, 1909.

  • Lane - Fitz Henry Lane (1804-1865)
  • 1852
  • Southwest Harbor
Fitz Henry Lane painted one of the earliest views of Southwest Harbor, and seems to have studied the shore carefully. The view shows a lumber schooner loading its long cargo through a port in the bow of the vessel. The white house immediately to the left of the vessel probably shows an early version of the Seth Higgins Clark House. The white house at the center of the shore is the Nathan Clark II House. The white building at the far left is Deacon Henry Higgins Clark's Island House Hotel, early in its career, before it was expanded into several stories with a mansard roof. Clark descendants, and their houses, are still in Southwest Harbor. William Howe Witherle (1821–1906) accompanied Lane on his trip around Mount Desert Island and recorded many of their adventures in his diary. On August 21 he wrote, "… George, Joe & myself took breakfast this morning at the Island House – and a fine one it was – price 25 cts – Mr. Lane took 2 sketches here…” The sketches referred to were of the shore and harbor, not the hotel. See: Witherle, William Howe. William Witherle Diary (unpublished manuscript) (August 16–21, 1852). Personal diary in the collection of the Wilson Museum, Castine, Maine (A00060-1a-1h).
