| The view is from the Pemetic Hotel (The Castle) and, on the Southwest Harbor side, shows the Clarence Clark (Ellsbert/Heilaka) house left foreground. The long roofed building in the center, next to the harbor, a bowling alley after World War II - currently the Hamilton Marine building. The building on the right with the striped roof is the firm of Clark & Parker/Manset Marine Supply Co./ and the Oceanarium since 1979. The Oceanarium is the oldest commercial building on Clark Point - the only one extant except the Clarence Clark House. The Manset shore is in the background with discernible landmarks, including the Manset Union Church, the Stanley wharf, the early Stanley House and numerous commercial buildings on the Shore Road. There are about 30 schooners visible in the harbor and tied up at the wharves. - Identifications by Meredith Hutchins - 2006 |

Beyond the foremast a rental building owned by Deacon Henry Clark is visible. The white house at the center was the residence of Henry Clark - built for him in 1871. The large house and barn at the left was the residence of William G. Parker - built for him in about 1868. The building with a dormer was a workshop in Deacon Clark's shipyard. There was an apartment upstairs. "The schooner Palestine, deserted here in Deacon's Harbor, was painted repeatedly by visitors. Behind the hull can be seen the workshops for Deacon Clark's shipyard business and Henry Clark and William Parker Chandlery. | "“The Maine Central fleet expanded quickly from the turn of the century until 1913. “Pemaquid” was the first of the new ships, having been purchased from the Long Island Railroad in 1901. She was a 132-foot steel-hilled single-screw steamer built in 1893 by Neafie and Levy of Philadelphia, with the distinction of being the last of the fleet to carry the Maine Central flag… Maine Central’s ships were sold off one by one until by 1931 the reliable “Pemaquid”, which during her thirty years with the railroad was used year-round, filling in for the seasonal vessels on the Mt. Desert run, was the only ship left. She was sold south that year and eventually was re-engined with a diesel. She lasted a long time, operating in the New York area into the 1960’s. The Eastern [Steamship Lines] threw in the towel three years later, in 1934. Hereafter the Maine trains would stop in Ellsworth, and Mt.
