In the War of 1812, during the British blockade of the east coast, two British frigates, HMS Junon and HMS Tenedos, chased the USS Constitution into Marblehead Harbor and the safety of Fort Sewall. "When the USS Constitution, 'Old Ironsides,' was preparing for its 200th anniversary in 1997, the crew from Ralph W. Stanley was called in to help determine if it was seaworthy. So Ralph, Richard and his brother-in-law, Tim Goodwin, went to Boston to conduct a survey of the old warship. 'I went all over that ship,' Richard Stanley said. 'She was really in good shape. She could have sailed.' They made some suggestions, although he said he didn't know what the Navy did with the ship. The Friendship sloop Endeavor sunk off Rockland Harbor on July 24, 2001 while racing in the three-day Friendship Sloop Days Annual Homecoming. Divers searched for the wreck for a month until she was found 70 feet down on the bottom of the harbor by using sidescan SONAR on August 18th a short distance from where she went down. Efforts to raise “Endeavor” were unsuccessful until Southwest Harbor captain Douglas E. Beal Jr. (1952-), aboard his “Salvage III” brought her up on Friday, August 24 and brought her back home. This sequential set of photos shows the process of Endeavor being lifted out of the water by Salvage III and brought back to Southwest Harbor for inspection and repair. The photos also show the damage to the boat after a month under water.

Ralph Warren Stanley built this 26' lobster boat, for Louise O’Brien at his 1st shop at 376 Main Street, Southwest Harbor. Mrs. O'Brien used the boat for her employees, Julius “Judy” E. Mitchell (1902-1982) and his brother, George A. Mitchell (1915-1998) to go back and forth from Cranberry Island to her yacht. The lobster boat was later owned by boat builder James “Jimmy” Harold Rich (1932-2010).

Arent graduated from the United States Naval Academy on May 28, 1863 and immediately went into action in the American Civil War, participating in the assault on Fort Fisher while serving on the steam sloop Ticonderoga. After the war, he rose steadily through the ranks, becoming Lieutenant in 1866, Commander in 1880, where he was from 1887 to 1891 commander of the school ship St. Mary.
