When the new schoolhouse was built, the old building was sold to George Harmon and it was used for stores and apartments. Many years later the owners of the Harmon Block found, in one of the rooms, an old blackboard from when their building had been a school. On the blackboard was still part of the poem, "The Village Blacksmith" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and some doodling on it, remnants of a lesson from circa 1906! This date refers to the time the blackboard was last used. The board shows the 4th stanza of the poem: "And children coming home from school Look in at the open door; They love to see the flaming forge, And hear the bellows roar, And catch the burning sparks that fly Like chaff from a threshing floor." Note: While the photograph was dated 1895, by hand some time after it was taken, archivists surmise that a date of c. 1900 is more reasonable. Jennie L. Richardson (1883-) was listed as a cook in 1910 census. Whatever post she held at the Claremont, she was not on the staff, nor in this photograph, at the age of 12 should the photograph have been taken in 1895. Rebecca, matriarch of the Carroll family of Southwest Harbor, dressed in her best, stands at the corner of her property, at 7 High Road, the Levi Robinson / James Long / Rebecca Carroll House. Newborns, graduates, brides, grooms, and entire families posed for the camera – alongside wicker props. Ornate wicker furniture made its debut in photography studios during the 1870s. Light, airy and noticeably three-dimensional in photographs, wicker props made greater headway in studios during the 1880s and early 1900s. Because it was so inexpensive and easy to store, photographers and the public took wicker to their hearts. The side wall on the left of this old school was constructed of boards tightly nailed together. The back wall was painted brick. The drawings of children with pinafores, pinned to the left wall, were done by the children and in crayon. We know that the photograph was taken in October from the owls and black cats and autumn leaf décor, still universally used in school rooms around Halloween.
