"“Myra J. Wooster” was built in 1918 in Tremont, Maine. She was a gas screw freighter, Official Number 216241, 46 gross Tons, 17 net Tons, 63.5’ long, 16.2’ wide and 7.2’ deep. She carried a crew of one and home ported in Southwest Harbor. She ran for the Portland, Friendship & Thomaston Line. Myra J. Wooster was named for Myra Jane Thurston (1875-1945). Myra was born on September 16, 1875 to Solomon G. Thurston and Mary Gott (Webster) Thurston in Tremont, Maine. She married Joseph Estabrook Wooster (1873-1955), son of John Wooster Wooster and Eliza Perrigo, on August 25, 1894 in West Tremont. Myra Jane Thurston died on June 23, 1945 in Tremont, Maine. Myra is connected to several other people in the SWHPL database. Her brother, John Sullivan Thurston (1853-1927) married Datie R. Rich (1851-1927), a sister of John “Talking John” Melbourne Rich. Myra’s daughter, Eva Wooster (1899-1988), married Ralph Gardener Benson (1893-1975). ""The motor packet Myra J. Wooster, Capt. "“The Maine Central fleet expanded quickly from the turn of the century until 1913. “Pemaquid” was the first of the new ships, having been purchased from the Long Island Railroad in 1901. She was a 132-foot steel-hilled single-screw steamer built in 1893 by Neafie and Levy of Philadelphia, with the distinction of being the last of the fleet to carry the Maine Central flag… Maine Central’s ships were sold off one by one until by 1931 the reliable “Pemaquid”, which during her thirty years with the railroad was used year-round, filling in for the seasonal vessels on the Mt. Desert run, was the only ship left. She was sold south that year and eventually was re-engined with a diesel. She lasted a long time, operating in the New York area into the 1960’s. The Eastern [Steamship Lines] threw in the towel three years later, in 1934. Hereafter the Maine trains would stop in Ellsworth, and Mt. "An attraction in the window of the Gilley Plumbing Co. is a tree branch on which are perched three beautifully mounted owls, the work of Wendell Gilley, who has made a study of taxidermy and has done excellent work in that line. The owls are very lifelike in their positions and the display is very interesting." – Bar Harbor Times, February, 1931.

"Archibald and Mira Dix were great-grandchildren of William Dix Jr. (1776-1814) who was in Tremont when he died in 1814. Archibald L. Dix (1867-after 1940) was born in January 1867 to master mariner John P. Dix and Harriet E. Verrill in Tremont, Maine. Capt. and Mrs. Dix settled in Philadelphia some time between 1870 and 1880. Archibald attended the University of Pennsylvania and became a doctor, graduating from there in 1893. He apparently had some notable success in treating Lupus. Archibald’s sister, Mira Verrill Dix (1870-1934) was born on May 18, 1870. She became a teacher. Archibald and Mira lived together in Philadelphia, with various members of their family, for the rest of their lives. While neither married they were frequently mentioned in the social pages of newspapers as attendants in weddings of their family. On November 18, 1897 Archibald was best man at the wedding of his first cousin, Frederick C. Holden, when Frederick married Maud Wilson in Brooklyn, New York. Frederick C. Holden’s mother, Hannah Augusta Verrill, was a sister of Archibald’s mother, Harriet E. Verrill. Their sister, May E. Dix (1873-), married John Lucas on November 19, 1902 with Myra, “Miss Verrill Dix,” as maid of honor and Archibald serving as an usher. After May’s husband, John Lucas died, she lived with the family in Philadelphia from at least 1920 to 1930. Mira, who sometimes went by the name of Verrill Dix, and her sister, May (Dix) Lucas rented the Miller Cottage in Bar Harbor in 1924. Mira Verrill Dix died c. December 29, 1934 and was buried on January 3, 1935 at the Westminster Cemetery in Marion, Pennsylvania where her father was buried. Her brother, Archibald, signed the papers. Archibald L. Dix died some time after 1940."

"Charles E. ""Charlie"" Wakefield (1908-1986) was born and died in Cherryfield, the ""Blueberry Capital of the World,"" a town in Washington County, Maine, on the Narraguagus River. Charlie played his saxophone at many Mount Desert Island celebrations of his time and was the author of ""Trademark: Music - A Treasury of Downeast Maine Musical History"" - 1978. The Charles Wakefield Memorial Bandstand in Bandstand Park on Main Street next to the Legion Hall in the Cherryfield Historic District is named in his honor. The NRHP number for the Cherryfield Historic District - site of the bandstand is 90001467. ""Without a doubt, Charlie [Wakefield] is the most versitile [Sic] musician I have ever worked with. Many musicians play several instruments but never really excell in any one. This was never the case with Charlie. I used to get the biggest kick out of calling him to play a job, he would always ask me what chair I wanted him to work, sax, trombone, piano or just name it and Charlie could handle it. If we were playing a combo job he always brought a couple extra instruments along just in case, maybe the valve trombone or the soprano sax.
