Raynor Greenleaf Wellington is a distant cousin of Eleazer Bartlett Homer’s family through Roger Wellington (1909-1698) and Mary (Palgrave) Wellington. Raynor received his master’s degree from Harvard in 1903 and became Professor of American History at the University of South Dakota. He wrote “The Political and Sectional Influence of the Public Lands, 1828-1848,” published by Riverside Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1914. The book is still cited in 2010. Raynor was a patient at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts in 1930 and later retired to Belmont. The Wellingtons were social and owned “one of the grand old estates of Belmont” while continuing to summer at their cottage, “The Sea and the Hills” at Southwest Harbor.
