Ernest Archibald Kidston was born August 25, 1877 in Baddeck, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia to William and Margaret J. (McKeen) Kidston. Ernest married Bessie M. Grant on May 30, 1901 in Boston, Massachusetts. The Kidstons lived in Hudson, Massachusetts and Tampa, Florida.
William and Bessie's daughter, Pearl L. Kidston, married the noted American psychologist, educator and administrator, Leonard Carmichael, professor at Harvard University, Radcliffe College, Brown University, president of Tufts University from 1938 to 1952 and Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution from 1952 to 1964 when he became vice president for research and exploration at the National Geographic Society.
"Hudson Arctic Explorer Dies - Arctic Explorer and Contractor Ernest A. Kidston, 78, of Hudson died last night of a heart attack in Washington, D.C., relatives said here today.
Kidston was visiting his daughter, Mrs. Leonard Carmichael. Her husband is secretary of the Smithsonian Institute and was a former president of Tufts university.
Kidston was en route from his Hudson home to a winter home at Tampa, Fla., and had stopped to visit his daughter. His wife was with him when he died.
He was a native of Bad Deck (sic), Cape Breton, N.S., and at the turn of the century took part in the Peary relief expedition.
Besides his widow and daughter, he leaves three sons. They are Comdr. Grant C. of Galveston, Tex.; Donald E. of International Co-operation Administration in the Philippines, and Arthur C. of Hudson, a Worcester insurance executive." - "The Lowell Sun," Saturday, December 3, 1955
